The Endangered Species Act requires the U.S. Secretary of the Interior (on behalf of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) to account for all identifiable federal spending on endangered and threatened species conservation on a species-by-species basis. The law also authorizes land acquisition, including bodies of water, for the conservation of federally listed species. The information below contains total species-specific federal funding spent on land acquisition for listed species from 2012 to 2014.[1]

HIGHLIGHTS
  • In fiscal year 2014, federal agencies spent $112.3 million on land acquisition for listed species.
  • The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spent $31 million while other federal agencies spent $81.3 million.
  • More than $36 million went toward land acquisition for fish species in 2014.
  • Fiscal year 2014

The table below shows the species for which land was acquired in fiscal year 2013, their endangered/threatened status, and the amount each species was reported to have received for land acquisition from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other federal agencies.
