Intimidation of voters refers to a type of voter suppression that involves deliberate acts to cause fear in potential votes, thus deterring them from coming out to vote.
Examples include:
- In the 1980s, the RNC hired off-duty policemen to monitor polling places in minority areas of New Jersey and Louisiana as part of a so-called ballot security operation. There was a public outcry and the RNC signed a consent decree guaranteeing no future such behavior. [1]
In the 1990s, the North Carolina Republican Party mailed postcards to hundreds of thousands of black voters telling them they would go to prison if they voted improperly.[1]
