Political career
Bill Gardner was elected by the people of New Hampshire in 1973 to serve as their representative in the State House of Representatives. He held the position for three years until 1976 when he was selected by the state legislature as secretary of state, a post he has retained through both Democratic and Republican assemblies ever since. In 1998, Gardner served as president of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS).
As the New Hampshire Secretary of State, he has been a strong supporter of the state's standing as the first in the nation primary status. Gardner collaborated with late former Governor Hugh Gregg in 2003 to chronicle the history and importance of the New Hampshire Primary in a book called Why New Hampshire. He also make an appearance in Winning New Hampshire, a 2004 documentary highlighting the significance of this one small New England state in determining the eventual nominees of both parties.
