The question in front of voters said, "This measure would increase the state minimum wage for workers eighteen years and older from $4.90 to $5.70 per hour, effective January 1, 1999, and to $6.50 per hour, effective January 1, 2000. Beginning in 2001, the state minimum wage would be annually adjusted. The adjustment would be calculated each September 30, using the consumer price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers, and would take effect on January 1 of the following year."
