Washington Initiative 200 (1998)
From Ballotpedia
Washington Initiative 200 on I-200, appeared on the ballot in the state of Washington on November 3, 1998. It passed with 1,099,410 votes for it and 788,930 votes against it.
There are two types of citizen initiatives in Washington--Initiatives to the People and Initiatives to the Legislature. I-200 was the latter type of initiative. It was filed on March 26, 1997 by Scott Smith and Tim Eyman. 280,511 signatures were filed and the measure was certified on January 21, 1998. The Legislature chose not to act on it, and as provided by the state constitution, the measure was then submitted to the voters.
The purpose of the citizen-initiated ballot measure was to prohibit government entities in Washington from discriminating or granting preferential treatment based on race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin.
