Hi! My name is Bailey Ludlam and I'm a Senior Writer on Ballotpedia - a free, collaborative, online encyclopedia about elections, ballot measures and access, petitions and ballot law, recalls, school and local ballot measures, and state legislatures.

Having experienced and worked in the world of not only politics but also media I understand the sheer importance of reliable, detailed and easily accessible information. Ballot wording, petitions, different types of ballot measures, not to mention the elections themselves can be very confusing. My years of experience in Washington, D.C., California and now in Chicago have shown me first hand exactly how messy politics and elections can get.

Typically voters have three main sources of information: their local ballot guide, campaigns and last minute media reports. However, more often than not, hot-topic issues like abortion and same-sex marriage can drown-out other ballot measures that can also severely impact how state governments function - for example, Maine's Question 3, which attempts to overturn a school consolidation law, and Texas' Proposition 2, which allow the legislature to tax a residence homestead based on the value of property instead of by its use. The measure may not be nationally controversial but depending how voters vote could impact which schools students attend and the amount of taxes residents pay.

Here at Ballotpedia we strive to provide our readers the nitty gritty details about the ballot measures as they become available. In 2009 I led Ballotpedia's first reporting trip to Maine, where everything from taxes and same-sex marriage, to marijuana and school consolidation are on the November 2009 ballot. In order to provide more in depth details regarding hot-topic ballot measures we conducted original interviews and reports which can be seen at The Ballotpedia Travel Journal.

Make sure to check back daily for new and exciting information on ballot measures. Thanks for expanding and/or visiting our site!
