Tennessee Amendment 1 provides for the erection of safe prisons, the inspection of prisons, and the humane treatment of prisoners. It was on the 1998 election ballot in Tennessee where it passed.

Text of the proposal

The language that appeared on the ballot:

This measure would strike the word "comfortable" from the section of the constitution which details the requirements for the construction of prisons. If passed, the section would read, "That the erection of safe prisons, the inspection of prisons, and the humane treatment of prisoners, shall be provided for."
