Ohio Lieutenant Governor Vacancy Act (1989)

The Lieutenant Governor Vacancy Act appeared on the November 7, 1989 ballot in Ohio as Issue 1, where it was approved.

Issue 1 was a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment, referred to the ballot by the Ohio State Legislature as a proposed amendment to Article III, Section 17a of the Ohio Constitution. It said that when a vacancy in the office of the Lieutenant Governor exists, the Governor is to nominate a Lieutenant Governor who shall take office upon confirmation by vote of a majority of the members elected to each house of the General Assembly.

  • No: 873,114 (34.7%)

Issue 1 was the only statewide ballot measure on the Ohio ballot in 1989. It was one of only ten on statewide ballots throughout the country that year.
