The Mississippi Attorney General is the chief legal officer and advisor for the state of Mississippi. The attorney general is in charge of bringing or defending a lawsuit on behalf of the State or its agencies and to act as counsel to state agencies and legislatures.
The current officeholder is Jim Hood.
Divisions
The major divisions and sections of this office are: Civil and Criminal Litigation; Opinion Procession; Governmental Affairs; White Collar Crime; and Public Advocacy, which consists of Consumer Protection, Medicaid Fraud, Child Protection, and Drug Prevention.

- Administrative Division
- Civil Litigation - Provide trial and appellate court counsel to state agencies, officials, and employees who are parties in litigation in state and federal courts
- Consumer Protection - Protect consumers and enforce guidelines for fair business practices
- Criminal Litigation - Represent the State in all direct criminal appeals, post-conviction collateral review, death penalty cases and federal habeas corpus proceedings in all state and appellate courts
- Crime Prevention & Victim Services - Crime Victim Compensation Program provides financial assistance to victims of criminal acts who have suffered bodily injury or death.
- Domestic Violence Division
- Medicaid Fraud - Investigates and prosecutes fraud committed by providers of medical services to Medicaid recipients
- Opinions And Local Government - Discharges one of the Attorney General's primary statutory duties, i.e., issuing legal opinions of the Office to state and local officials, boards, agencies, and their attorneys
- Prosecutors Training - Provides a means for state, city, and county prosecutors to receive the required 12 hours of continuing legal education per year
- Public Integrity Division - Conducts public corruption and white collar crime investigations
- State Agencies - Charged with providing legal representation to the Executive Offices of Mississippi State Government
Qualifications
The fee for party candidates is $200 made payable to the appropriate state party executive committee. There is no fee for independent candidates but 1,000 signatures must be submitted.
