Maine Question 2, also known as An Act Prohibiting Certain Bear Hunting Practices was on the November 2, 2004 election ballot in Maine as a initiated state statute, where it was defeated.
- Yes: 344,322 (47%)
- No: 389,455 (53%)
Question text
The question asked of voters was:
"Do you want to make it a crime to hunt bears with bait, traps or dogs, except to protect property, public safety or for research?"
Supporters
The initiative was supported by a group called Maine Citizens for Fair Bear Hunting. It spent $1,286,375 on its campaign.[1]
Donors to the group included:
- Humane Society of the United States: $485,000
- Fund for Animals: $385,000[2]
Opponents
The primary opposition to the initiative came from the Maine Fish and Wildlife Conservation Council. They spent $1,743,625.[3]
