Live Oak school parcel tax, Measure A, 2008

The Live Oak School Parcel Tax Measure A was on the November 4, 2008 ballot in Santa Cruz County for voters in the Live Oaks school district.[1]
The measure creates a $84 dollars per parcel tax annually for nine (9) years. Measure A is the first parcel tax requested by the district. To pass, it needed a minimum 2/3rds vote in favor.[2]
There are about 12,000 voters within the district. The total amount raised by the tax is expected to be around $500,000/year.
Measure A was approved with 77.01% of the vote.
Text of Measure A
The ballot language was:
- "To improve education, including science, art and music, provide reading and math tutoring programs, attract and retain qualified teachers, keep school libraries open, preserve small class sizes, and provide after school programs to keep children safe, shall Live Oak School District be authorized to implement an annual $84 education parcel tax for nine years, exempting senior citizens, with citizen oversight, mandatory audits, no money for administrative salaries and all money directly benefiting local schools?"
Campaign donations
The campaign to pass Measure A received nearly $30,000 in contributions. 80% of the donations came from companies outside Santa Cruz who do business with the district. Four of them gave $5,000 each.[3]

- Michael Watkins, superintendent of the County Office of Education.
- Live Oak Superintendent David Paine.
- Three Live Oak school district board members.
