The copy of the Washington State Constitution published by the state government characterizes Amendment 71 as having passed on November 4, 1980 and as being a product of "Substitute House Joint Resolution No. 37, p 652." However, the 1980 ballot measure election results also published by the state government characterizes HJR 37 as having the ballot title "Shall a graduated net income tax be authorized, excess levies for school operations be prohibited, and some excise taxes limited?". The 1980 ballot measure election results list does not include any ballot measures that relate to the subject of judicial qualifications or the judiciary in general.
- 1988:
The ballot measure election results page published by the Washington Secretary of State for 1988 shows no ballot measures. As well, the List of all Washington State Initiatives to the Legislature shows Initiatives 97 and 97B as having been on the November 1988 ballot.
- 1972:
The State of Washington's list of all Initiatives to the Legislature lists Initiative 40 and 40B and Initiative 43 and 43B as having been on the November 1972 ballot. However, the State of Washington's list of election results for 1972 ballot measures says nothing about 40, 40B, 43 or 43B as of November 2009
