Kathy Stein (b. January 31, 1955) has been a Democratic member of the Kentucky Senate since 2008. She represents the 13th district.
Education
Stein is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic & State University. She went on to earn her BA from Clinch Valley College at the University of Virginia in 1974. She later received her JD from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1983.
Professional experience
Stein was a Bookkeeper for Appalachian Film Workshop, "Appalshop", from 1974 to 1975. She worked as Teacher/Faculty Advisor/Chair/County Delegate for Pound High School of Wise County Public Schools from 1975 to 1980. She also worked as Instructor for Clinch Valley College at the University of Virginia from 1977 to 1980. She then worked as Associate Attorney for Marshall and Gullette from 1984 to 1986. From 1988 to 1993, she worked as Staff Attorney for the Fayette County Public Defender and as Public Defender for Fayette County Legal Aid, Incorporated. Stein then worked as attorney for the Director of Domestic Violence Division for the Fayette County Attorney from 1993 to 1996. She has been attorney/owner of Kathy W. Stein, Attorney at Law, since 1997.
Political experience
Stein was Treasurer/Clerk for the Town of Wise from 1974 to 1975. In 1980 she was Elector-at-Large for the Virginia Electoral College. She served in the Kentucky State House from 1997 to 2008. She then joined the Kentucky State Senate in 2009. She has served in that position since, representing the 13th district.
