Jorge Luis Garcia has been a Democratic member of the Arizona Senate since 2003. He represents the 27th district and is currently serving as the senate's Minority Leader. He was elected to the Arizona Senate in 2002 and re-elected in 2004, 2006, and 2008.[1]

Education

Garcia received his BA in Sociology from the University of Arizona in 1975. He went on to earn his MSW in Social Work, Planning, Administration, and Community Development in 1981.

Professional career

After earning his degree, Garcia worked as Deputy Director for the El Rio Health Center from 1980-1984. He then worked as Clinical Manager for the Maricopa Medical Center from 1984-1987. In 1988 he became a Social Service Director for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe until 1999. He was an Emergency Room Social Worker for the Maricopa Medical Center from 1990 to 1998. Garcia moved on to become a social worker for University Medical Center from 1991-1993. In 1999 Garcia worked as Home Health Administrator and Program Manager for the Tohono O'odham Nation. He worked as Independent Contractor for various tribal government from 2000 to 2005. Today he is a social worker for both University Physicians and various Indian tribes. He started working for them in 2005 and 2002, respectively.

Political career

Garcia served as Precinct Committee Person for District 10 from 1977 to 1981. He went on join the Arizona House of Representatives from 1993 to 1996. Garcia became a senator in 2003 and served as Assistant Minority Leader in the Arizona State Senate from 2007 to 2008. He is currently Minority Leader for the senate.
