Joan Menard is a Democratic member of the Massachusetts Senate representing 1st Bristol and Plymouth.

Education

Joan Menard earned her Bachelors degree at Bridgewater State College in 1967. In 1971, she obtained her Masters degree in education at the same institution. In 1979, Menard acquired her CAGS at the Boston College Doctoral Program. At some point, she earned her MEd at Boston University.

Professional Experience

Joan Menard began her professional experience as a School Administrator for the town of Somerset. In 1964, she worked as an elementary school teacher in the same town until 1974. In that year, she worked as director of special education until 1979.

Political Experience

Menard began her political career in 1976 by joining the Democratic State Committee and in 1978 by becoming a representative for the Massachusetts House of Representatives. In 1991 she became the Assistant Majority Whip for the Massachusetts House of Representatives. A year later, she became the Majority Whip until 1996. In 1999, her service as a representative ended and a year later Menard became a senator for the Massachusetts State Senate and still serves in this regard, along with her responsibilities as the Assistant Majority Leader for the state of Massachusetts and continuing to hold her position in the Democratic State Committee.

Joan Menard is currently a member of several organizations including the Association of State Democratic Chairs, the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Council of State Governments, the Five Cents Savings Bank, the Katie Brown Fund, the League of Women Voters, the Massachusetts Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Board, the National Organization of Women, the New England Board of Higher Education, the Southeastern Massachusetts Labor Center, Steppingstone, and the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth organization.

Menard currently serves on two non-legislative committees; the Massachusetts Women's Legislative Caucus and the Women's Political Caucus.

Joan Menard was born September 6, 1935 in New York, New York and was raised in Fall River, Massachusetts. She is currently married to Charles Menard with two children and is known to be Roman Catholic.
