The Indiana Senate is the upper house in the Indiana Legislature. It consists of 50 members, each representing a district that is identified by a number. The Senators serve four-year terms and are not subject to term limits. Half of the Senate is up for re-election every two years.
The session of the Indiana Senate begins the first Tuesday after the first Monday every January. In odd numbered years, the Senate must meet 61 days, though not consecutive, and adjourn no later than April 30. The sessions in the odd numbered years are called a "long" session. In even numbered years when elections are held, the senate must meet for 30 days (not consecutive) and adjourn no later than March 15. The sessions in the even numbered years are a called "short" session.
