A City of Hollister Residential Housing Exemption, Measure Y ballot proposition was on the November 4, 2008 for voters residing in San Benito, California, in the City of Hollister, where it was approved.

The question voters faced is whether they wanted to exempt residential housing projects within the Downtown district from the 244-allocation cap put in place by voters in 2004 through Measure U.

  • Yes: 5,263 (52.08%)
  • No: 4,842 (47.92%}

The exemption through Measure Y applies only to areas in the downtown district. The boundaries are roughly North Street to Hawkins Street and McCray Street to West or Monterey streets.

The general city residential allocation remains at 244, but projects within the Downtown district will not be subtracted from those allocations.

Supporters of Measure Y hope that the owners of existing properties may decide to renovate upper floors into residential if they do not have to compete for the 244 units with larger developments.
