Edwin Grant was a Democratic state senator in California against whom a recall effort was launched in 1914. It was successful.
According to newspapers covering the recall, it was started because of Grant's opposition to "vice conditions" with his sponsoring of the Redlight Abatement Act. It took three tries to collect the necessary signatures to qualify the recall for the ballot. Progressives despaired, and the Los Angeles Times rejoiced. In the wake of the recall petition drives, the state legislature increased the penalty for forging a name on a petition.[1]
