There are forty senate districts in the California State Senate; each senator serves for a four-year term. Elections are held on a staggered basis. Elections for senators from the even-numbered districts are all held in one year (in 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, etc.) while elections for senators from the odd-numbered districts are held in the opposite election year (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, etc.)
