An Arizona Sales Tax Increase ballot proposition may be on the November 2010 ballot in Arizona.
Gov. Jan Brewer wants the Arizona State Legislature to vote to refer a one cent sales tax increase to the ballot.[1] According to Brewer, "If we don't get additional revenue in 2011, it will be a disaster. 2012 will be a major catastrophe."[1]
The sales tax hike Brewer is expected to generate approximately $1 billion a year. It would hike the state's sales tax from 5.6 cents to 6.6 cents on every dollar of taxable items purchased. The sales tax increase, if placed on the ballot and approved by voters, would be a temporary three-year temporary increase.[2]
History
In June 2009, lawmakers approved a state budget but only days later Brewer vetoed the bill because it did not include the sales tax measure.[3]
On July 31, 2009 lawmakers attempted to pass a state budget for the new fiscal year which began July 1, 2009. But, by the end of the day, lawmakers found themselves at yet another stalemate on the already late budget because of a failed agreement on the sales tax increase initiative.[4]
Supporters
The governor has fought strongly in favor of the initiative. In June, the governor vetoed the new fiscal year budget bill after it was approved without the sales tax increase measure. Senate president Robert Burns has also spoken in favor of the measure.[4]
Opponents
Republican Senators Pamela Gorman and Ron Gould have stated that they are opposed to the governor's tax measure. Democrat lawmakers said that they are uncomfortable approving the sales tax measure because they don't want to use sales taxes paid by consumers in order to balance the budget.[4]
